As RePlay for Kids expands the types of toys that are modified, we are finding that some toys require more than a simple 3.5mm receptacle to best utilize the toy. A child still needs to be able to activate it with a single switch, but newer toys may be best used by activating multiple switches or a sequence of multiple switches. Dave Young of Young Circuit Designs and Ed Rapp of Flocel got together to come up with a simple solution that would monitor a switch input and then control up to 8 outputs. The system is based on the MSP430 microcontroller and some N-channel and P-channel FETS. What happens when the switch is pressed is totally customizable in the firmware.
